Expanding Wireless Broadband for Emergency Responders
How it Works
WiMAX

The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards define a technology for last mile wireless broadband access. As an alternative to wired broadband such as cable and DSL, WiMAX will provide multiple advantages for wireless Internet service providers (WISPs). However, there are many features which have been built into the WiMAX standards that make this technology a possible communications medium for the public safety and emergency response communities.

Some of the key features of WiMAX that make it attractive for public safety and emergency response communications are;

  • Standards-based Technology for Last Mile Wireless Broadband Access

  • Cellular Footprint

  • Security and Quality of Service Built In

  • Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation

  • Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN)

  • Fixed, Nomadic, Portable and Mobile
